Simple, intuitive and ergonomic, WordPress CMS perfectly meets the requirements of the web and even has the favors of the search engine like Google. According to a recent study, WordPress powers, more than 27 percent of the Internet and the number is still counting. This rapid growth is only possible due to the contributions of the WordPress community developers around the globe.
Every year, WordPress launches few minor and major releases. This year in 2017, the newest version WordPress 4.8 named “Evans” has been released on June 8, 2017. Matt Mullenweg, the co-founder of WordPress himself is leading this major release.
WordPress 4.8 Features
- An Improved Visual Editor Experience
- News & Events Widget
- Introduced New widgets
- Visual Editor Text Widget
Excited to see what these WordPress 4.8 new features really are? Let me explain them in pictorial representation.
1. Improvement in Visual Editor
With an improved version of TinyMCE 4.6, now WordPress users can get benefits of new inline link boundaries.
In the previous versions, editing inline hyperlinks could be a real challenge. In many cases, either the text was not properly attached to the hyperlink or extra text got attached to the anchor text. The new version solves all these problems through link boundaries.
Confused? It looks hard to understand, here is a short video describing the improvement in Visual Editor.
2. WordPress Events and News
WordPress community is vast and growing rapidly. Considering the growth, WordPress integrated a widget “WordPress Events and News widget” in the core to guide WordPress community about nearby events. Just enter your country or city name, all nearby events will appear in a moment.
3. Enhancements in Widgets
One of the most exciting features of WordPress 4.8 is, they have introduced three new widgets, i.e., image, audio, and video. Not only this, they have also enhanced the existing text widget. Here is the screenshot, comparing WordPress 4.8 widgets with the previous version.
Let’s see, how new widgets actually work!
a) Image Widget
Now you can easily add an image to the sidebar, footer or any specific widget area of your site by using Image Widget. Drag and drop the Image Widget into your specified widget area, select an image, set title and click save.
Now you can see, the image is displayed on the sidebar.
b) Video Widget
Drag and drop the video widget to any specific widget area, and click on add video. Now, you will have two choices, either upload a new video or insert from a third party video sharing site like YouTube.
Now you can see, the video is displayed on the sidebar.
c) Audio Widget
Just like Image and Video Widget, WordPress 4.8 introduced Audio Widget too. Just drag and drop Audio Widget on any widget area, and click on Add File. You can choose, either to upload a new audio or insert from a URL. An audio bar will be displayed on specific widget area of your site.
4. Visual Editor in Text Widget
Last, but not the least, another feature of WordPress 4.8 is Visual Editor in Text Widget. Previously, you need to have a basic knowledge of HTML and CSS to use this text widget. But, with this WordPress 4.8 updated version, you will have a visual text editor.
And…. here you go with formatted text without having any coding skills.
There are a few other noticeable minor changes.
- More Accessible Admin Panel Headings
- Removal of Core Support for WMV and WMA Files
- Multisite Updates
- Media Widgets API
- Customizer Width Variable
