WordPress 3.9 Beta 2 Review

April is a very important month for WordPress users. In that month, a new version of WordPress 3.9 will be launched. It will be the first full-feature version release of WordPress in 2014. On March 11, the first beta version of WordPress 3.9 was released, and today, Beta 2 was announced by WordPress.org.

With more than 100 changes, WordPress 3.9 Beta 2 provides you with the ease of providing feedback on any leftover issues. Meanwhile, all the major bugs have been fixed. The interactive interface is really a blessing for WordPress geeks.

Seems like WordPress 3.9 focuses more on media controls, Beta 1 added file drag and drop, image resizing, cropping, and editing. With the new WordPress 3.9 Beta 2, it renders your videos and audios as you embed them in the Visual Editor. This means developing video and portfolio sites will be much easier.

You can easily find the “Create playlist” feature on screen in 3.9 beta 1; however, such is not the case in the new beta. In this version, “Create Audio Playlists” and “Create Video Playlists” are only visible when you upload an audio or video file and publish the post or page. This is quite annoying, especially for newbie users.

It also provides improved media manager and theme installer. Theme installer now comes with “Feature Filter” that is similar to Tag Filter. By using this feature, users are able to filter the themes as per their choice.

You can always give feedback directly in Alpha/Beta support forums regarding any bug/problem found.

The WordPress 3.9 is still in the development phase. We recommend you not to run it on your actual production site. But, you can use it in a testing environment (or pseudo interface) to check out how it works. Let us keep our fingers crossed!

Please don’t forget to give your feedback on new improvements provided.

  • I agree with the observation that there’s generally more focus on media controls in WordPress 3.9. The Visual Editor user experience is also better especially regarding embedding media and copy-pasting content from MS-Word files.

    • Yes Wesley, the copy pasting from text editors is supported by default, initially there was a confusion when people couldn’t find the “Paste from Word” button in the Toolbar. Seems like core developers realized that media controls in WP were not user friendly and new users had troubles aligning and formatting posts. Can’t wait for the final release and test it out to its core on live projects 🙂
