by Cloudways  June 27, 2016

As an ecommerce merchant, you want to control every aspect of your Magento store. You set up how your website looks so that it will attract the customers, with pictures that will best represent your products. You set up all the required operations of your Magento store but the most important step to configure is the shipping methods.

The question here is why is it so important? Because once your customer’s orders are shipped what happens after that is out of your control. That’s why the shipping method that you choose is the most important part of your entire process of taking orders and shipping them. If you choose a wrong method of shipping, you and your customers will face many problems.

Magento 2 Shipping Methods

So, if you want your precious customers to be happy you have to pick a good shipping method. The Magento 2 gives four default shipping methods, and this tutorial shows you to configure them. First of all, you need to know four methods that are listed below:

  1. Free Shipping
  2. Flat Rate
  3. Table Rates
  4. Dimensional Weight

These are those four default ways for shipping your products in Magento 2. Further on, I’ll show you how to do each method!

1.   Free Shipping

The first method is the most fulfilling method over the other three because it contains promotion. To attract your customers, you set the standard condition for the customer. For example, if I want to give my customers free shipping, I must set some conditions. Supposing that free shipping is for those customers who generate an invoice of more than $200, so due to this condition my customers will shop up to $200. So this is a smart and efficient way to increase the sale.

These are some steps to do free shipping:

Step 1: Navigate to Store > Configuration > Sale > Shipping Methods

Configuration of Shipping Methods

Step 2: In Free Shipping menu you have enter required information.

  • To active, the Free Shipping just set Enable to “Yes.”
  • Now you need to add Title box
  • After adding Title box, you have to enter Method Name
  • To get free shipping put Minimum Order amount
  • Put Displayed Error Message
  • Ship to Applicable Countries, this option depends on the developing plan of your store, that means you can set it to All Allow Countries or Specific Countries.
  • According to your decision you have to configure the value of Show Method if Not Applicable to “Yes” or “No”.
  • In last option Sort Order, this option is set when you want to position free shipping methods in Magento 2
  • Last but not the least hit Save Config

Step 3: Configuring the Carrier

  • In shipping method menu just go to UPS and then set Free Method to
  • Minimum Order Amount for Free Shipping, this field allows you to set a specific amount for your customer on which reaching he can get free shipping. You can set any amount like $100, $200, etc
  • Again just press Save Config to complete the setup for this method.

 2.  Flat Rate Shipping

The store owners are used to set up this method because it is a fixed option for the customer, i.e., the shipping charges will be fixed for each product.

To learn how to do it just follow three steps below:

  • Next is Price add that fee you want to charge your customer for shipping service
  • In Calculate Handling Fee calculate the shipping cost either it can be fixed amount, or it can be percent amount
  • In case of any error type the error message in Displayed Error Message.
  • Ship to Applicable Countries, this option depends on the developing plan of your store, that means you can set it to All Allow Countries or Specific Countries.

Step 3: Hit Save Config

  • Now, if your store has virtual products then set the value of Include Virtual Products in Price Calculate
  • In Calculate Handling Fee calculate the shipping fee either it can be fixed amount, or it can be percent amount
  • For the case of any error type, the error message is Displayed Error Message.

Step 5: To ensure the rates are calculated properly go through the payment process using different address. This process will ensure you that you have calculated the shipping and handling rate properly using above steps.

4.  Dimensional Weight

The last and fourth method is Dimensional Weight. This method also calculates the shipping charges, but it bases on the volume of the package of the product. This is calculated by many shipping companies that are responsible for the delivering of packages to customers from merchants worldwide. Some of them are FedEx, DHL, Leopard, UPS, etc. Therefore most of the merchants use this method.
