Google Cuts 100 Jobs in Cloud Unit Amid Ongoing Workforce Shifts

Google has reportedly laid off at least 100 employees from its cloud-computing division, signaling ongoing adjustments within the tech giant’s workforce.

The layoffs affected a variety of roles, including those in sales, engineering, operations, consulting, and the “go-to-market” strategy team, according to an internal report by CNBC. Some of the affected employees had recently been involved in preparations for the Google Cloud Next Conference held in April.

A Google spokesperson confirmed the layoffs, saying, “As we’ve shared before, we continue to evolve our business to meet our customers’ priorities and the significant opportunity ahead. We remain committed to investing in areas critical to our business and ensuring our long-term success.”

Google shares remained steady in midday trading on Tuesday.

Since the beginning of the year, Google has implemented a series of small-scale layoffs across its various divisions, reallocating resources to accelerate the development of advanced AI products. In April, the company laid off about 200 employees from its “core team” of engineers, who support the technical foundation of its flagship products.

Additionally, Google cut several hundred jobs in its ad sales division and over 1,000 roles in other units, including the hardware team responsible for products like the Pixel and Fitbit.

In a January memo, Google CEO Sundar Pichai hinted at further cost-saving measures, identifying “durable cost savings” as a key goal for 2024.
