Agency Spotlight: How Ventus Design Studio Turned Passion Into a Thriving Business

Some agencies start with a clear business plan. Others grow from years of hands-on experience, self-teaching, and a genuine passion for solving problems. For Nicole Sauk, founder of Ventus Design Studio, the journey began in 1998 when “web design” wasn’t even a widely understood term.

When Nicole Sauk was just 14 years old, she wasn’t just messing around online. She was already thinking like an entrepreneur. While her friends were out having fun, she was at home teaching herself HTML on Neopets, experimenting with layouts on gURLpages, and figuring out how to turn her love of design into something bigger.

Even as a kid, I always knew I wanted to run my own business,” she says. “Once I discovered web design, I realized this was the path that would get me there.”

Those early experiments quickly turned into school awards, and by 16, Nicole landed her first real web design job. She was building websites for a local hosting company. It wasn’t just a gig. It was the beginning of something bigger.

By 2012, after years of freelancing and client work, she officially launched Ventus Design Studio, offering design and web development services to small businesses in her area. Word spread quickly.

For a long time, I didn’t need a niche because local referrals kept me busy. It was mostly small businesses, people who needed a website but didn’t know where to start.”

Then, a random YouTube video changed everything.

From Local Clients to a Global Niche

Nicole started posting tutorials about website building. One video explained how to build a business directory site with WordPress, and it took off.

“I was shocked at how many people found it helpful. Then the questions started coming in — people asking for help, wanting advice, or looking to hire me.”

That led her to lean into directory-style websites as a service. Now, Ventus Design Studio works with people around the world who want to launch their own directories, sometimes from scratch and sometimes fixing broken ones.

The rest of the agency’s work still includes traditional small business websites, but directory consulting and design are now a core focus.

Why Hosting Was a Headache; Until It Wasn’t

For a while, Nicole was using Flywheel for client hosting. It worked, but the cost didn’t scale well. As her client base grew, she paid more without gaining much control or flexibility.

“I started looking around for other options. At the same time, someone from Cloudways reached out to talk about a video collab; perfect timing.”

She gave the platform a try and was surprised by how much control it offered without needing to be a sysadmin.

“I’m not a server expert. I care more about how things look and feel, but Cloudways didn’t make me choose between power and usability.”

With Cloudways, she could host multiple client sites from one dashboard, spin up staging environments, and manage backups without getting tangled in cPanel or overly technical interfaces.

One Platform, Three Sites, Zero Headaches

One of her most challenging projects came from a growing restaurant group. They wanted three different websites: one for each restaurant brand, plus a parent-company site that tied everything together.

Instead of building three separate WordPress installs, Nicole used WordPress Multisite, hosted on Cloudways, to manage them all under one umbrella. This gave her and the client a single place to make updates and track performance.

“The staging feature was huge. I could test changes on a clone before making them live, no surprises for the client.”

The project wasn’t easy, but it taught her how much a solid platform matters when juggling complexity.

Tools That Power the Process

Staying organized is half the job when you’re running a solo agency. Nicole uses a small but effective toolset to keep everything humming:

  • ClickUp runs her tasks, content planning, and client onboarding.
  • Calendly and Zoom handle scheduling and calls.
  • ChatGPT helps with rough drafts and brainstorming, but always with a human in the loop.

And, of course, Cloudways handles the hosting side.

“If I had to manage each site manually or worry about slow speeds, I’d lose so much time. Cloudways just works, and it keeps me out of panic mode.”

Building for the Long Game

Nicole doesn’t just launch websites and walk away. She offers ongoing care plans for updates, maintenance, and support, and clients appreciate the stability.

That recurring income also helps her business grow without relying on a constant stream of new leads.

She’s also investing time in growing her YouTube channel, which now brings in both clients and viewers looking to learn. And she runs her own business directory website as a testing ground for fresh strategies and tools.

“I see websites as assets. They’re not just a box to check; they should actually work for you.”

Looking Ahead: Growth Without Burnout

In the next five years, Nicole plans to deepen her niche while also expanding her reach through YouTube. Her tutorials have already attracted a global audience; now, she’s focused on building digital products, tools, and resources that help others succeed.

She also runs her own business directory platform, aligned with her niche, which lets her test new ideas, generate passive income, and fuel her tutorial content.

“Websites can do more than just look pretty. They can work for you, generate revenue, save time, and open doors. I want to keep showing people what’s possible.”

How Cloudways Keeps Her Moving Forward

When asked what makes Cloudways stand out from the many other platforms she’s tried, Nicole doesn’t hesitate.

“It’s the perfect balance of performance, price, and control. Other platforms felt bloated or overpriced. Cloudways feels like it was built with agencies like mine in mind.”

Some standout features include:

Before Cloudways, she often worried about outgrowing her hosting setup or running into technical limitations. Now, she has peace of mind, giving her room to experiment and innovate.

For New Agency Owners

Nicole’s advice is simple: start small, stay consistent, and don’t wait to share what you know.

“You don’t need to know everything to be helpful. Start a blog, record a video, and post on LinkedIn. That’s how people find you and start trusting you.”

She also emphasizes choosing good infrastructure from day one.

Don’t go cheap on hosting. That one decision can save or wreck your client relationships.”

Final Thoughts

Ventus Design Studio is proof that you don’t need a huge team or investor backing to build a successful agency. You need skills, systems, and a few smart decisions — like the right hosting partner and joining an Agency Partnership Program that aligns with your growth goals and offers the support, visibility, and resources to scale faster.

Nicole’s been building online since the ‘90s, but she’s still learning, experimenting, and sharing what works. That honesty, paired with solid execution, is what sets her apart.
