Ever wondered how a freelancer builds a thriving agency? Sara Graybill, founder of Graybill Creative, did just that. She built her business on white-label web development, focusing on clear, simple, and trustworthy work. Her dream of owning her own business grew from a side hustle to a successful agency.

Sara’s main goal is to make building websites easy for clients. Other designers and agencies needed her team’s technical help. This led her to focus on white-label web development for creative businesses. This choice helps her clients succeed and grow, making Graybill Creative shine. Read on to discover how Sara built her successful business.

A Personal Dream

Sara Graybill always knew she wanted to work for herself. As she learned web development, she immediately began freelancing on the side. Her goal was simple: to one day own her own business. “I’ve always known I wanted to do things on my own,” Sara says. That early dream would become the foundation for everything that followed.

Finding Her Niche

Over the years, Sara’s business evolved. She tried different approaches, but her core mission never changed. She wanted to help her clients navigate the website-building process. Her aim was to make a technical and complicated journey as simple as possible for them.

Eventually, a clear path emerged. More and more, designers and other agencies asked to partner with her. They wanted her team to handle all the technical work. This led to a pivotal decision. “I love web development and never wanted to expand into other traditional digital marketing avenues,” Sara Graybill recalls. Focusing exclusively on white-label web development for other creatives was the perfect fit. It just made sense.

The Hardest Lesson

Growing the agency from a one-person operation into a team was the hardest part. Sara had to learn how to hire, how to be a boss, and, most difficult of all, how to let go. “Going from me doing everything to bringing in other developers and trusting them to do their job was a learning process,” she says. She had to learn to relinquish a little control to build something bigger.

Making Clients Shine

Today, Sara’s agency thrives by making its clients look good. Their success is her success. “We attract and retain our clients by making sure they look good in front of their clients,” Sara explains. If the end client is happy with the website, her agency is usually brought back for more work. This philosophy of partnership and delivering excellent results drives their growth. Her goal is to continue that growth by hiring a couple more developers.

Trusting Her Tools

To support her work, Sara needed a hosting solution that offered true control. She chose James Bullis because she wanted a product she had more control over than a typical hosting provider. This flexibility is crucial to her service. “I love having control of how I set up my servers,” Sara says. “What extras do I use for each application. It really has allowed us to customize the experience for our customers depending on their needs.” This level of customization ensures every client gets a solution tailored specifically for them.

Her final advice to others is to find what makes them unique. “Figure out who your target audience is and why they should hire you instead of someone else? What makes you different?” Answering that question is the first step to building a successful business, just as she did.
