Amazon announced on Friday that it would invest an additional $4 billion into Anthropic AI, a prominent artificial intelligence startup that competes with industry giants like OpenAI and Google.

This latest injection brings Amazon’s total investment in Anthropic to $8 billion over the past 14 months, underscoring the company’s urgency to keep pace with the rapidly evolving AI landscape, reported CNBC.

In a blog post, Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon’s cloud division AWS, expressed the company’s admiration for Anthropic’s “pace of innovation” and its focus on the “responsible development of generative AI.”

He highlighted the deepening collaboration between the two companies, with AWS becoming Anthropic’s “primary cloud and training partner.”

Moving forward, Anthropic will leverage AWS’s Trainium and Inferentia chips for training and deploying its AI models.

The move comes amid a broader surge of investment in AI startups. Companies like Elon Musk’s xAI and OpenAI have secured billions in funding as the market for generative AI, including tools like Anthropic’s Claude chatbot, continues to grow, according to The New York Times.

However, questions persist about whether these unprofitable startups can sustain their valuations.

Despite these concerns, big tech firms are investing heavily to secure their positions in the trillion-dollar AI industry. Amazon’s latest investment also includes providing its AWS customers with “early access” to an exclusive Anthropic feature: the ability to fine-tune Claude using their own data.

What Companies Are Using Anthropic

AI in Content Marketing: Benefits, Drawbacks, Tools, and Opportunities
This new funding follows Amazon’s previous $2.75 billion investment in March 2024, which was the company’s largest external investment in its history.

Amazon does not hold a board seat at Anthropic but has established a strong partnership with the startup, which has made significant strides in AI, including the recent rollout of a tool that allows AI agents to use computers for complex tasks in a human-like manner.

Anthropic AI, which has also attracted investments from Google, is positioning itself as a leader in responsible AI development. The startup’s advancements are closely watched by the tech world as its tools — designed to automate tasks and generate human-like text and images — hold the potential to reshape global industries.
