Agency Spotlight: How Define Marketing Built a Business on 30 Years of Digital Experience

Martin Mills has spent more than three decades in website design and development. That experience didn’t just shape his career. It became the foundation for Define Marketing, an Australian agency built to offer clients something more complete than what the market was providing.

Martin didn’t rush the build. He moved into the agency format deliberately, adding services over time to ensure every client’s need was covered. The result is a business grounded in experience, guided by clear values, and still growing.

Rooted in Three Niches

Define Marketing focuses on three verticals: hospitality, ecommerce, and professional services. The choice wasn’t arbitrary. Martin and his team had accumulated deep experience across all three, and that expertise made them well-positioned to serve clients in those spaces with real confidence.

Rather than spreading thin across every industry, the agency leaned into what it knew. That focus has become one of its defining strengths, allowing the team to offer targeted strategies rather than generic solutions.

The approach has also earned recognition. Define Marketing has been named a finalist on multiple occasions in local and Australian business awards, specifically for its customer service and business ethics. For Martin, those acknowledgments reflect something meaningful: a validation of how the agency chooses to operate.

Competing With DIY Culture

One of the most persistent challenges Martin has faced isn’t a competitor agency. It’s the DIY space.

Many business owners undervalue professional digital services, opting instead for build-it-yourself website platforms. For years, this created friction. “We have always found it difficult to overcome the DIY space and business owners who don’t value the work we and other agencies do in the digital space,” Martin says.

His solution was counterintuitive: embrace it. Martin came to recognize that DIY tools can be a valid starting point for smaller businesses. Define Marketing repositioned itself as the natural next step, the agency clients turn to once they outgrow those tools and need proper support.

It’s a patient strategy, but it works. Clients who arrive after hitting the ceiling of a DIY platform tend to be ready to invest and ready to commit.

A Hard Lesson in Contracts

Not every project has gone smoothly. Martin recalls one particularly difficult engagement involving a large health and wellness website that required a complete rebuild.

Delays came from both sides. Technical issues slowed the agency’s progress, while the client lagged on approvals and content. The project ran over time and over budget. Because Define Marketing had agreed to a fixed price, there was no room to recover the cost. “We ended up making nothing out of the project except for a disgruntled client,” Martin recalls.

The experience reshaped how the agency approaches new work. Martin tightened contracts, clarified scope, and built in proper fee structures to protect both parties. It was a costly lesson, but it made the business more resilient.

Tools That Keep Things Running

Define Marketing runs its operations on a focused stack of tools. Go Highlevel serves as the agency’s CRM, managing leads, tracking sales, and powering marketing automations. Martin found it valuable enough that the agency now connects clients to the platform as well, helping them build out a solid sales backend.

WordPress underpins most client websites, providing a stable, well-supported foundation for marketing-focused builds. And for hosting, the agency relies on Cloudways.

Martin had worked with large WordPress-specific hosts before. While the service was generally adequate, he found those platforms often lacked technical flexibility or fell short on customer support. “We heard about Cloudways through a search online and performed some research,” Martin says. “We loved the offering, the communication and the ability to scale affordably whilst still maintaining the quality we are known for.”

The shift made a practical difference. Tools like Site Manager, a high-quality server dashboard, built-in Cloudflare Enterprise, and client billing functions gave the team more control. Martin points to one instance where a client believed their site had been hacked. Using Cloudways’ built-in security tools and log files, the team quickly identified the culprit as a broken, stuck plugin update and resolved it without disruption.

Building What Lasts

Martin’s approach to growth is rooted in relationships rather than volume. His team works with successful business owners to identify gaps in their marketing strategies, guiding clients as they learn rather than simply delivering a product and stepping back. Networking and building genuine business relationships remain central to how Define Marketing wins new work.

For the next five years, Martin wants to grow the business beyond its current size while keeping it agile and personal. “We want to be able to be the agency we have always been, but with a higher overall business throughput,” he says. Innovation is how the agency plans to retain clients in a competitive market.

His advice to anyone considering starting an agency is direct: don’t cut corners on quality, and always have a proper contract in place. The motto he returns to is equally plain: “Just keep moving forward and adjusting your course with clear intentions.”

After 30 years, that philosophy has proven to be enough.
