“This breakthrough brings us closer to achieving the ideal performance predicted by theory, enabling more sustainable cooling solutions for high-power electronics,” said Kai Wu, lead author in Yu’s lab, as quoted by UT News.
“Our material can enable sustainable cooling in energy-intensive applications, from data centers to aerospace, paving the way for more efficient and eco-friendly technologies.”
The innovative material combines liquid metal Galinstan and ceramic aluminium nitride, resulting in superior thermal conductivity.
This cutting-edge solution could significantly reduce cooling pump energy consumption by 65%, addressing a critical component of the data center energy crisis.
With cooling currently accounting for about 40% of data center energy use, this development comes at a crucial time.
Goldman Sachs estimates that AI alone will increase data center power consumption by 200 terawatt-hours per year between 2023 and 2030.
