In a recent report, Bitdefender revealed some alarming trends in consumer cybersecurity. According to their 2024 Consumer Cybersecurity Assessment, a staggering one in four people experienced a security breach in the past year.
The findings highlight serious issues with how people manage their passwords: over a third of respondents admitted they write down their passwords, and nearly 20% use the same password for three or more accounts. This poor password hygiene is making many of us easy targets for cybercriminals.
The types of security incidents people faced were varied, with SMS scams topping the list at 45.4%. Close behind were fraud attempts (44.4%) and phishing emails (42.1%). Data breaches affected 27.5% of victims, while malware infections and doxxing (publicly revealing private information) impacted 16.4% and 9.2% of respondents, respectively.

Interestingly, the report found that people who believe they can identify scams are more likely to report security incidents. This might mean that those who aren’t as confident or knowledgeable could be getting scammed without even realizing it.

Bitdefender stressed that weak password practices are a major vulnerability. Even strong passwords can be compromised if users don’t employ multi-factor authentication or if they’re tricked into revealing their credentials. Impersonation scams, where fraudsters pose as businesses or government agencies, have led to significant financial losses, with Americans losing over a billion dollars to such scams in 2023 alone.
The report also highlighted the particular risks facing cryptocurrency investors, citing a case where an Indian national was sentenced to 20 years in prison for spoofing the Coinbase website and stealing over $37 million from crypto traders.
To help combat these threats, Bitdefender recommends that consumers improve their cybersecurity practices and use comprehensive security solutions. They suggest using their free scam detection service, Scamio, to quickly and effectively verify suspicious communications.
In essence, Bitdefender’s report is a wake-up call for all of us to be more vigilant about our online security and to adopt stronger measures to protect our personal information.
