What is MCP?
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets AI tools take real, authenticated actions, not only answer questions. Cloudways exposes its platform as an MCP server, so your AI client can launch, secure, deploy, and manage infrastructure directly.
Which AI clients are supported?
Claude (Desktop and Code), Cursor, ChatGPT, Gemini CLI, VS Code Copilot, Windsurf, Codex, Cline, and any other MCP-compatible client. Bridge clients like Claude Desktop require Node.js v24+.
Do I need to know the API?
No. You describe what you want in plain language: "upgrade PHP to 8.2 on server 12345", and your AI agent picks the right tool. All 240+ Cloudways Developer API endpoints are covered, but you never touch them directly.
Do I need to pay for MCP?
No, there’s no extra charge billed by Cloudways to use MCP. It’s available to all customers.
What’s the difference between read and write operations?
Read operations (listing servers, pulling analytics, checking scan results) are always safe to run. Write operations (creating servers, restarting services, revoking certificates) require intentional, explicit prompting. Build the habit of starting with reads and confirming the target before any write.
What happens if I run a destructive action by mistake?
Destructive tools require confirmation before they execute, and every action is audit-logged. Many operations are also reversible. For example, a backup restore can be rolled back with a single prompt.
How do I fix a stale tool cache?
MCP clients cache the tool list on first connection. After an update, toggle the Cloudways MCP server off and on in your client's settings. Or, fully quit and restart the client (Cmd-Q on macOS; closing the window isn't enough).
Is my Access Token secure?
Authentication is via a scoped Access Token. You control what each token can do (full access, read-only, or per-endpoint) and when it expires, from 1 day to 1 year. Tokens are shown once at creation and can be revoked instantly from your dashboard.
Won’t 244 tools overload my AI client?
No. Your client sees just 65 tools; the rest load dynamically on demand through a meta-tool architecture. Your context window stays lean, and every dynamic tool runs through the same validation, rate limits, and audit logging as a direct call.
