River Cruise Advisor is an independent travel publication built to help travelers navigate one of the more complicated and expensive categories of trip planning. It’s founded and led by veteran travel journalist Ralph Grizzle alongside his daughter Britton Frost.
Together they bring more than 40 years of combined river cruising experience and over 75 firsthand sailings to their work. That expertise has helped more than 8,000 travelers choose river cruises matching their budgets and preferences.
The site runs on a large WordPress archive of roughly 2,700 posts and 200 pages, much of it published while Grizzle reports from ships, hotels, and airports across time zones. Here’s how switching to Cloudways changed what that workload looks like day to day.

Running a large publication with a small team meant Grizzle couldn’t afford to lose hours diagnosing a server problem, or discover that a routine plugin update had quietly changed how an important page looked. Site maintenance before Cloudways demanded too much hands-on attention.
Updates had to be watched closely, troubleshooting could pull him away from reporting, and he didn’t always trust that a change could be easily reversed. As Ralph Grizzle put it, “when your office is wherever you happen to be traveling, reliability determines whether you can do your actual job.”
Server performance at previous hosts often lagged as well, adding to the strain of keeping the site dependable.
“The central problem was fragmentation. Hosting, caching, security, backups and WordPress maintenance could feel like separate responsibilities, and when something went wrong it was not always obvious where the problem originated or who owned it.” — Ralph Grizzle
On a content-heavy site, even a minor conflict among WordPress core, a theme, and dozens of plugins could affect pages published years earlier. Grizzle wanted a host that offered strong performance and expert support while still letting him run the site his own way.
Specifically, he wanted updates, backups, staging, and recovery to work as one coherent system, not a collection of unrelated tools.
What first caught Grizzle’s attention about Cloudways was the promise of cloud hosting’s performance and control without needing to become a server administrator himself. The combination of managed WordPress hosting, Cloudflare Enterprise, backups, staging, and knowledgeable support addressed the practical problems he’d been trying to solve.
After the move, the site was responsive, the platform’s controls were easy to understand, and help was available when he needed it. That combination left him with the sense that the infrastructure was finally working in the background, including performance he describes as flawless and server scalability he could rely on, instead of constantly demanding his attention.
The Site Manager brought that same relief to daily maintenance. Centralizing plugin, theme, and core updates into one dashboard replaced moving among different WordPress screens and trying to remember what had been updated and when.

That matters because WordPress maintenance, while necessary, isn’t why readers come to River Cruise Advisor. Grizzle noted that “every hour not spent managing plugins is an hour that can go toward reporting on river conditions, comparing cruise lines, answering readers, or developing a new story.” Centralization also makes the site far easier to manage while he’s traveling.
Visual regression testing addresses a different risk. On a site with thousands of older articles and pages, an update can succeed technically while still changing a layout, button, image, or navigation element, and testing catches that shift instead of waiting for a reader to report it.
“The important benefit [of the Site Manager] is not that updates never cause conflicts. It is that a conflict can be caught and reversed before it becomes a public problem.” — Ralph Grizzle
He points to a concrete example: a mix of long-established content and newer WordPress layouts means a theme, page-builder, or plugin update can affect styling on a key planning or sales page even when that page still loads normally. Knowing Site Manager can compare the page visually and roll back quickly has made him far more comfortable keeping the site current.
Grizzle estimates the centralized workflow saves him about 1 hour per week on routine maintenance, and potentially much more in a week when an update would otherwise have caused a conflict. Just as important, the interruption itself has largely disappeared.
Instead of sitting in front of an update screen, he can start a process and return immediately to writing, editing, or working directly with travelers. That shift has given River Cruise Advisor’s large archive a more stable, consistently responsive foundation, one that asks more of its hosting than a small brochure site would.
Uptime, by his own estimate, has held at 100 percent since migrating to Cloudways. Even without reducing the experience to a single number, he measures it in the time he no longer spends responding to hosting problems, and in trusting the site will be available when breaking river news sends readers looking for answers.
“Cloudways Site Manager gives an independent publisher the confidence and safeguards of a much larger technical operation without requiring a large technical team.” — Ralph Grizzle
Grizzle is most interested in capabilities that make a growing WordPress archive easier to manage proactively: automated visual testing, centralized maintenance, performance monitoring, scalable resources, and faster identification of potential problems.

With more than 20 years of accumulated content, growth for River Cruise Advisor isn’t just about publishing more, it’s about keeping older, valuable material fast, secure, and usable.
He’s especially interested in automation and intelligent diagnostics that can flag plugin conflicts, performance bottlenecks, and unusual traffic before they ever reach readers. The more that monitoring runs quietly in the background, the more time he and Britton can spend on journalism and helping travelers plan their trips.

Cloudways Site Manager centralizes updates, catches visual regressions, and rolls back changes instantly, so your site stays stable whether you’re at your desk or on the road.
