Morten-Storgaard

Joining our Influencer Interview series today is Morten Storgaard, founder of PassiveIncomeGeek and GoDownSize. Morten is an online marketing veteran with 13+ years of experience. He started his journey in ecommerce in 2007. With a passion for promoting passive income, he started building websites to earn and maintain passive income. Today he also teaches people how to do the same.

In the early stages, his main focus was on building websites that generate income, So he started building content websites while working as an SEO consultant. He eventually quit the consulting as his website started to take off with magnificent results.

Today he is running a portfolio of bigger sites together with a team of writers and editors while sharing his experiences on Youtube and creating a course that teaches others how to build these passive income websites.

Cloudways: Morten, thank you for joining us today. Please tell us a bit about your journey as an online marketer. What was the key factor that made you think, building a content website is your game?

I’ve been doing client SEO for a decade while I built up a portfolio of sites, so I could see the money start coming into my account every month before I made the jump and “fired” my last client. I’ve started two ecommerce sites as well so I knew that I wanted to create a more passive form of income for me and my family.

Cloudways: What was your visionary approach behind Passive Income Geek that made it a landmark of success and inspiration for many?

Thanks! I really wanted to get more network within the blogging sphere. I’m based in Denmark and very few here are doing what I do for an English-speaking audience, so I really wanted to get to know more people. That’s why I started sharing on YouTube, and fortunately, people liked my stuff. So it was only natural to create a course to build up a community around me. I really enjoy hanging out in my community (connected to my course) and it’s great to already have some friends in there.

Cloudways: Considering the fierce competition in Today’s business world, what makes a Passive Income Geek stand out from the crowd?

Well, I’m not from the United States. That to some is a differentiator, as lots of Europeans are creating sites for an American audience as it’s more lucrative in terms of monetization.

But also, I think people like the clean approach to SEO – I don’t build links or do any even remotely shady stuff to try and rank higher in Google. I just go for article topics that have not been written on previously and then I let the links come naturally.

Cloudways:  What is the biggest marketing challenge you’ve faced. How did you overcome it?

Getting started on YouTube was painful. I decided to shoot a video every day for months. That forced me to push through and become good at it. But man, those first videos are hard to watch. I was LITERALLY reading from a screen word for word!

Cloudways:  With the spike in online marketing, comes a spike in the passive income models and solutions that freelancers have a great interest in. How do you position your brand to ensure its long-term success?

I have taken a quite different approach with my course. I first created the course and now I’m actually taking my course myself and filming every step of it. So people have the course + 10 hours of video where they see me actually find a niche, find topics, do keyword research, create outlines, write articles, etc. I think people really like that hands-on approach. I don’t think anyone else in this space has done that, and I hear so much positive feedback from people really only “getting it” after they actually see me do it.

Cloudways: Any recent marketing trend that has caught your eye. What potential does it have to turn around the ecommerce industry?

I’m pretty focused on what YouTube can do these days for a course like the one I’m building. Other than that I think content sites with ads are the future as affiliate networks are more work in the long run and ads are more passive.

Cloudways: What are the main areas affiliate marketers should focus on in the beginning? Should they depend on tools?

I use very few tools. I think the most important step, in the beginning, is to focus on getting traffic to your site and not be too concerned about ranking for terms that will make a good affiliate income. We can build up our sites with more “light” content that ranks easily and monetize with ads in the beginning.

Cloudways: According to you what are the main ingredients of successful lead-generating content?

I don’t really do lead generation. I just do affiliate marketing, ads, and info products for monetization.

Cloudways: What is the importance of web hosting for passive income websites? What factors will you consider while choosing a hosting provider?

Speed and speed. Basically, just that, as I see good customer service and chat being implemented pretty much everywhere in the hosting space. I think speed will be the SEO word for 2021.

Cloudways: Being an online marketing veteran, what advice would you like to give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Keep at it. Focus on one strategy where you can get some hand-holding and keep at it till you see success. That’s the main thing, to not shift from one thing to the other. I see too many people chasing a new strategy every six months. It’s important to follow someone until you get it.

Earn at your own pace.

Refer customers and set up your passive income stream

Cloudways: Let’s step away from work. What do you do to relax and unwind?

I lift weights and play Lego with my toddler. I don’t have much time for myself as we have a 4-year-old, but I absolutely LOVE being around him and my wife. I’m very much a family-person which is also the main reason I left ecommerce and started searching for something way more passive.

Cloudways: We would love to see your workstation. Would you like to share a picture?

work-station
Cloudways: Thank you, Morten, for taking out your time. Lastly, Who would you recommend we interview next?
