  • Raw and real content performs better than professional-looking content

  • Tracking how the content is performing
  • Reuse content that you have already created – e.g. cut out different snippets and turn them into ads
  • Let other people do the selling for you

How WooCommerce Is Evolving to Assist Online Store Owners in the Future?

  • Woocommerce is the strength of the ecosystem as a whole – its flexibility, sense of ownership, and community draw people towards WooCommerce
  • Our guests expect WooCommerce to become even more focused on new beginners, i.e. new store owners on the platform, and improve their experience with the product
  • There has been an increasing trend of acquisitions – WooCommerce has acquired many tools to make a store become more efficient and effective, also from a marketing point of view
  • There is a new strategy emerging – To offload things we don’t need to have running in WordPress – WooCommerce is adopting the same strategy
  • WooCommerce to focus on improving the onboarding of new store owners, as well as large store owners that are using WooCommerce because of its open-source nature
  • We have a Cognitive bias – AI-assisted upselling and AI prompts and layout with machine learning will certainly drive sales upwards, especially for large online retailers like Amazon and Alibaba with a lot of traffic.

How Can Live Commerce Help with Improved Customer Experience?

  • Through hiring an influencer that describes the product you want to sell, tries it out, and does it in a live commerce way
  • Hyper personalization adds to an ecommerce store’s revenue growth by increasing the lifetime value of customers. Just be relevant in this personalization.

  • How extensions, availability, community, resources and so many use cases make WooCommerce excel, in comparison to other ecommerce platforms. Our guests told us how there is a lot more that we can do with WooCommerce than just sell products
  • With WooCommerce, you can create a bespoke online store and customer experience. There are so many subscriptions, memberships, and courses that show you how you achieve just about anything for your ecommerce store.

UX Tips: Preparing Your Website for the Holiday Season and Live Website UX Review (1st Live Session)

This is a quick summary of what happened in the first live session of BFCM Prepathon Journey Day 3, along with tips that our esteemed guest speakers shared with our entire online community on the importance of good UI/UX, especially for ecommerce stores.

Website Review with Paul Boag and Tips to Improve UI/UX

Attending the BFCM Prepathon day 3 journey was an insightful experience! The first session introduced us to the importance of good UX/UI, where our guest, Paul Boag, and maverick Brent Weaver,  reviewed 3 websites. You can watch the full session on our Youtube channel. Here are some of the points that were discussed while reviewing the first website:

  • Don’t interrupt your customers with a newsletter subscription pop up on the landing page of your ecommerce website
  • Newsletter subscription pop up can appear on the product page when your potential customer has found what they would like to buy
  • Don’t use carousels on the landing page – because your potential customers will then only see the information they interact with and have no control over movement and animation (they can miss critical information because of the distraction)
  • Don’t put text over a video background
  • Have navigation arrows or sliders underneath the carousel with a summary of what they will find on each slide, e.g. men’s collection
  • Features like the choice of material, how it is made, size, all these details that set a product apart should appear on the product page
  • Show social proof – this will show your potential customers that people they aspire to be like also wear or use a certain product for e.g. a celebrity.
  • Alongside the product image, show the product being used by people your customers want to be like
  • Handle objections of customers that they might have, e.g., how long will it last, will it fit, can we return, how to return, etc
  • If you don’t have reviews, don’t show the review section
  • Use primary and secondary CTA

Testing UI/UX: Delighting Customers With a Bug-free Experience (Twitter Chat w/ Michael Bodnarchuk)

We had a live Twitter chat with Michael Bodnarchuk and got some insightful answers in our chat sessions with him.

Some Tips from Michael Bodnarchuk on Delighting Customers With an Excellent UI/UX Experience

Our guest shared a lot of tips and insights on how to create a MAGICAL customer experience, some of which are the following:

  • Write/Design the PHP code with the thought of testing it. This will make unit testing easy for you
  • Make the code isolated, make it easy to be set up out of application context, make the code produce results rather than side effects.
  • Cover all layers of testing when using a testing tool. The application should be tested as a whole. So acceptance and functional testing is a good start to prove that the application is working.

Michael Bodnarchuk’s Brainstorming Process Before Designing/Testing a Framework

  • To make sure the API is really good for developer experience
  • Overcome all limitations when it comes to API design
  • Avoid server failures during BFCM by having a good scaling strategy and good performance testing. Tools like JMeter can help with that.

Our guest speakers for this live session will include prominent industry names like Kathy Zant, and Zach Stepek, and they will be dissecting the topic Why Security Is Essential for a Successful BFCM Campaign.

Highlights of BFCM Prepathon Journey – Day 2

Why Web Security Is So Important for an Ecommerce Store (1st Live Session)

This is a quick summary of what happened in the first live session of BFCM Prepathon Journey Day 2, along with tips that our esteemed guest speakers shared with our entire online community on the importance of web security, especially for ecommerce stores.

What We Learned From The BFCM Prepathon 2021

Attending the BFCM Prepathon day 2 journey was an enlightening experience! The first session introduced us to the importance of web security, and here are some of the points that were discussed in depth:

  • Dario Jazbec Hrvatin shared that an ex-employee hacked his company’s website, and this was a wake-up call to better internal security. They work remotely and the employees live across all continents. The situation was ruthless, and it was a major breach.
  • Breach of security and a compromised website raises questions for customers as well and might shake their confidence in your website. This is something you don’t want!
  • Web security is important if you want to avoid lost sales, and minimize all damages caused by security breaches
  • You have to protect customer data. It should not be stolen. You need to avoid that risk at all costs to sustain customer confidence.

Some Tips to Improve Security

To improve a website’s speed and performance, our guests shared some incredible tips in the 1st live session on 16th November 2021, some of which are the following:

  • Perform website security scanning everyday
  • Security-related articles to educate people
  • Sending out emails to educate readers to always be aware of suspicious activities on the web
  • Install credible security plugins on WordPress like Wordfence or Patchstack (Check the details before installing a plugin)
  • Maintain and upgrade your website, as well as plugins, regularly
  • Good documentation and code infrastructure
  • Reach out to web security experts if you are not tech-savvy. Cleaning up a website of malware is a lot more expensive than protecting it.

Some Major Security Breaches

  • Most security breaches are on the website level when there are leaks in the code
  • Some security breaches result from installing bad plugins from questionable proprieties or developers

The Need for an Optimized Ecommerce Store During the BFCM Campaign (Twitter Chat w/ Steven Wu)

We had a live Twitter chat with Steven Wu and got some insightful answers in our chat sessions with him.

Some Tips from Steven Wu on Ecommerce Store Optimization

Our guest shared a lot of tips and insights on how to optimize an ecommerce store during the BFCM, some of which are the following:

  • Planning is key to implementing a successful BFCM campaign. Prepare weeks in advance for BFCM campaign to avoid downtime or issues during the BFCM sales season.
  • Black Friday won’t start on 26th Nov, in fact, it will start earlier and last longer for retailers!  Amazon started their Black Friday deals at the beginning of this month!
  • Bottlenecks, loading issues, and speed performance are all key priorities that all merchants should aim to resolve before Black Friday
  • Optimize the website codebase to optimize images for faster loading and look at reducing the overall page load
  • Implement some sort of caching systems such as Varnish and Redis to help speed up the page load time
  • There shouldn’t be any ecommerce store launched on Black Friday without a caching mechanism.

Why Security Is Essential for a Successful BFCM Campaign (Twitter Chat w/ Kathy Zant and Zach Stepek)

We had a live Twitter chat with Kathy Zant and Zach Stepek and got some insightful answers in our chat sessions with them.

Insights from Kathy Zant and Zach Stepek on BFCM success and Security

  • People look for social proof, the lock icon to indicate that their transactions are secure over SSL, and other indicators that your store can be trusted. They’re entrusting you with personal and financial info that, if not properly secured, could cause them harm.
  • As online retailers,  agree to adhere to a standard of security defined by the payment card industry, PCI DSS. A violation of that trust could permanently and negatively impact your ability to process card-based transactions.
  • The software that runs your website is still software and needs security updates and patches. If you don’t maintain your site, you risk attack.
  • The greatest security threat to eCommerce is almost always human: password reuse is always one of the worst. Ensure you have some brute force protection in place, as these are the most common attacks on WordPress.
  • Use something like LastPass or 1Password to utilize unique passwords for every site you have a login for. Enforce password security policies. If the input field is telling you the password is weak, harden it.
  • Back up your ecommerce site relatively frequently if you have high transaction volumes. In mission-critical environments, creating a MariaDB Galera cluster can help to secure your database transactions while avoiding the drawbacks of traditional DB replication.

What to Do If Your Website Is Compromised?

Zach Stepek shared the following steps on Cloudways live Twitter chat on BFCM Prepathon Day 2 to deal with a website with compromised security:

  • Isolate the site to prevent further attack
  • If you’re using something like Cloudflare, enable Under Attack Mode
  • Document the things you can tell are wrong. Then reach out to a professional who can help you with the recovery process.
  • Change your passwords. Scan your site. You can use automated scanners from any of the services mentioned in the live chat to locate modified files.
  • Check your local machine for malware.
  • Talk to your hosting provider.

Highlights of BFCM Prepathon Journey – Day 1

How to Improve Your Site Performance and Speed (1st Live Session)

This is a quick summary of what happened in the first live session of BFCM Prepathon Journey Day 1, along with tips that our esteemed guest speakers shared with our entire online community on improving website speed and performance.

What We Learned From The BFCM Prepathon 2021

Attending the BFCM Prepathon day 1 journey was no less than MAGIC! The first session kicked off with a great start, and here are some of the points that were discussed in depth:

  • Lots of good design practices are aimed at making your website faster
  • Asael Dreyer said he cloned websites from other hosting service providers to Cloudways, and the results were MAGICAL!
  • The Aminoshop website test PROVED how Cloudways can make a website’s performance 3x FASTER!
  • When it comes to price, it is a third of what other hosting service providers are costing in Israel

Some Performance Tips from Or Fialkov

To improve a website’s speed and performance, our guest Or Fialkov shared the following tips in his live session on 15th November 2021:

  • Find a good hosting company, Learn why Cloudways is the best alternative to Flywheel.
  • Use CDNs, for instance, Cloudflare, especially when you have a big website with a lot of images and videos.
  • Don’t use a lot of plugins in WordPress, because lots of plugins make the website very slow. Try to install as few plugins as you can, and also when you use a theme, use the one that is FAST and SIMPLE!
  • Compress your images, and evaluate the right size and dimensions before uploading them on your website. After uploading, use a tool like Imagify to compress your images. This is a great tip for making WooCommerce faster because there are a lot of product images
  • Use fewer fonts. Preload the fonts on WordPress.

Practical Points for Optimization

  • Fix lazy load, including background images affected by lazy load
  • Image compression – set image formats, and mobile size images
  • Fix JavaScripts that might delay user interaction
  • Fix 404 errors and redirects

The Best Practices of Clean Application Development (2nd Live Session)

Here is a quick summary of what happened in the second live session of BFCM Prepathon Journey Day 1, along with tips that our esteemed guest speakers shared with our entire online community on clean application development.

What We Learned From The BFCM Prepathon 2021

The second live session was on clean application development and how it is so important to speed the application as well as the entire business workflow!

  • The cleaner the code, the faster the application
  • Defend the code and application by upholding a professional opinion
  • While you are coding, enjoy it and do it as best as you can
  • Sniff the “code smell,” by using PHP CodeSniffer or PHPStan
  • Bad coding is not clean and results in lost time i.e. developers have to revisit the entire code once again to fix bugs, etc.
  • Excessive debugging leads to procrastination, missed deadlines, and financial loss, and can be avoided by using cleaner code

How Do People Typically React to a Dirty Application?

  • Padded estimates
  • Developers hide and become defensive
  • They blame others and their requirements
  • They hire more developers (maybe they don’t even need many developers – as a result, old ones take a back seat as they think there are more people to work now)
  • Rewriting code the wrong way again – an endless loop of issues!

Tips for Having a Cleaner Application

Some tips to have a cleaner application are the following:

  • Iterative Refactoring
  • Improve the design of existing code
  • Learn and comply with coding standards to save time
  • Clear and definitive names in code
  • Functions and variables should tell a story
  • Don’t use different names throughout the application – e.g. productname, productinfo, etc
  • Don’t use hard to understand characters like lower case “L” and uppercase “O”
  • Class names should be nouns eg. customer, account, product, company
  • Method names should be verbs e.g. getCustomer, closeAccount
  • Use Short, Single-Purpose functions. You should be able to tell what’s it doing at a glance
  • Add comments about the intent of the code (what’s that supposed to do in your code). This makes it easy for people to follow and understand what’s going on and why is your code a certain way.
  • Peer code review is a great learning tool because peers help train each other on strong points
  • Use design patterns in your code (standard ways of dealing with common code problems)
  • Don’t be afraid of reusing somebody else’s codes – you can use open-source codes and use codes from public repositories
  • Test your code! Have proper requirements of the application
  • Stick to only 30 lines of codes, and learn how to defend it with reasons!

Tips and Tricks to Get Your Online Store at Pace for the Holiday Season! (3rd Live Session)

Here is a quick summary of what happened in the third live session of BFCM Prepathon Journey Day 1, along with tips that our esteemed guest speakers shared with our entire online community on how to speed up an online store for the holiday season.

What We Learned From The BFCM Prepathon 2021

The third live session was on pacing up an online store and how it is so important for creating a MAGICAL customer experience!

  • How to speed up a website
  • Uptime and reliability
  • Most gains attributed to speed are actually due to reliability improvements, e.g. moving from a bad host to a good one

Some Actionable Items

Some tricks to pace up an online store, or just about any website, are the following:

  • Uptime monitoring
  • Use good hosting, close to your target market
  • Use Cloudflare, it’s one of the fastest DNS hosts – especially if you have a high traffic website
  • Use double backups (Blogvault+hosting)
  • Security and patching (You can use Wordfence + Cloudflare)
  • Check page weights and page sizes and make sure your pages are not that big!
  • Do a site-wide test to check the page sizes
  • Your pages should be under 3MBs. A page over 3MBs would deliver a terrible customer experience!
  • You can use EWWW Plugin for image compression
  • To fix lazy loading, use WP Rocket free lazy load plugin
  • Test your website using Screaming Frog, and identify the root causes for slow speed
  • Build a speed test step in your content publishing process as well
  • Do a plugin and app audit and review
  • CRUX & Real User Experience – Create a CRUX report and use Google Search Console to address each page

Mistakes People Make on Ecommerce Sites

Some common mistakes identified by our guest speaker, Brendan Tully, are the following:

  • Big page and image (size over 5MB)
  • They don’t speed test
  • They let performance affect their SEO efforts and customer user experience
  • They don’t realize the importance of web performance and speed
