Application

An application (also known as an application program or ‘app’) is a computer program designed to carry out a specific function. Applications that are accessed solely or primarily over the internet (thus being at least partly managed through servers and not local machines) are known as cloud applications.

An application describes any program that allows you to perform a specific task on a computer or smartphone. Some of the most common application types include internet browsers such as Chrome or Safari, communication tools like Zoom, and cloud-based productivity tools such as Microsoft Office 365. Cloudways supports a variety of PHP-based applications, including WooCommerce (a popular ecommerce plugin for WordPress) and Magento (an open-source ecommerce platform).
Without application software, we wouldn’t be able to browse the internet on our devices, communicate virtually with others, download and stream music, or create spreadsheets and presentations. It’s likely there’s an application covering any function you can imagine; apps are essential for everyday life, and vital for businesses.
A web application runs on a client-server basis, requiring the existence of both client-side and server-side components. “Clients” offer user interfaces and call upon application features, while “servers” store the data (and often functions) that allow them to work.
