Magento has announced that the Magento 1 security patches and support and won’t be available after June, 2020.
So counting from today, Magento 1 store owners have exactly 236 days before M1 sunset. The alarming fact is that there are still a significant number of Magento store owners that are on Magento 1.
Given this alarming situation, we decided to bring in the expert opinion to discuss the situation in detail. Thus, we hosted a live #CWChat session so that everyone in the community can benefit from the expert knowledge.
Let us present the alpha geek and Magento expert – Ray Bogman.
Ray is the Senior Business Solutions Architect at Adobe, Magento. His technical credentials include Certified Magento 1/2 Solution Specialist (MCSS), Magento Certified Professional Cloud Developer (MCPCP). Since 2008, Ray has trained thousands of people to use Magento for their business.
We greatly appreciate his time for attending this #CWChat session 🙂
If you missed out on the live #CWChat session, here’s the recap with all the interesting questions and answers.
We started the #CWChat session with a basic question, a comparison of Magento 1 and Magento 2.
Comparing peaches with orange is not always ideal. #Magento1 has been there for more than 1 decade.
Where #Magento2 a brand new system developed from scratch.
From a technical and business perspective #Magento2 is a modern solution built for the future.— Ray Bogman (@raybogman) November 7, 2019
The next question was about the factors merchants should keep in their minds when migrating from M1 to M2?
Well, #Magento1 if End of Life June 2020. And that is a fact. My advice would be is creating a migration plan first, and taking the correct steps doing this. #CWChat #Magento

Never underestimate the importance of a detailed discovery phase which is not complete until ALL parties involved are comfortable and confident in the solution / migration.

Pro tips are important! Our next question was about the checklist for the migration process..
Strategy, Requirements, Team, Build, Test, Release #CWChat #Magento

The fourth question was about the recommended tools for Magento migration.
It all depends on what the scope is of the migration, are we migrating all of the data (sales, configuration, customers) or only a selection of it. A best practice is the Magento migration toolkit (https://t.co/nAViRLjHaS)
— Ray Bogman (@raybogman) November 7, 2019
I haven't heard of any plan in that section
— Ray Bogman (@raybogman) November 7, 2019
Intermediate format is much better as a lot data in direct db to db migration is redundant. Also it gives opportunity to a merchant to rethink their data structure and optimize their business process.

Everyone loves an easy process! Our next question about the strategies Adobe is adopting to make this migration process simpler.
Q5: Since M1 support is going to end soon, what steps is Adobe taking to make the migration a hassle-free operation?@raybogman #CWChat pic.twitter.com/7WToHRp0Hy

Magento Professional Services (https://t.co/9bLBZrOPJs) within Magento, an Adobe Company are helping clients to move from Magento 1 to Magento 2. And over the last few years I have been evangelizing on how to migrate from Magento 1 to Magento at many events over the globe.

Our sixth question was about the struggles one has to face while migrating from M1 to M2.
Teamwork and communication is the key to success. Since there is no I in team 😉 And with the team I mean every from the client to developers. It’s like a soccer match, everybody has a role but will only be successful once we play together.#CWChat #Magento
— Ray Bogman (@raybogman) November 7, 2019
The most difficult is communication and managing expectations. Code by itself doesn’t do anything, it's the plan and team behind it which makes or breaks it. #CWChat #Magento
— Ray Bogman (@raybogman) November 7, 2019
The next question was about the recommended tutorials about Magento migration.
Please review the latest video from Image 2019 and a whitepaper I wrote. #CWChat #Magento https://t.co/KGrPDPGF3O https://t.co/1B1h1rMTIu

We ended the session by asking the audience about the next expert to grace the upcoming #CWChat session.
I would like to invite @ericerway to talk more about #PWA #PWAStudio and the future of mobile website. What can we expect in the next couple of years? #CWChat #Magento
