SSL

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and its successor, TLS (Transport Layer Security) is an encryption-based cybersecurity protocol developed to ensure privacy, authentication and data integrity in internet communications. An SSL certificate (also known as a TLS or SSL/TLS certificate) is a digital certificate that authenticates a website’s identity and facilitates a secure connection.

Whenever you see a padlock icon in the address bar of a website, this means the site is encrypted using an SSL certificate. This protects any sensitive data (such as credit card information) which is transmitted between the web server and the web browser. Cloudways supports all SSL/TLS versions on all servers across our server farm and Cloudways CDN.
SSL is crucial in ensuring internet connections are secure and preventing cyber criminals from accessing, reading or modifying information transferred between two systems. SSL certificates maintain the confidentiality of online communications and reassure visitors that a website is reliable and secure to exchange sensitive data with.
When a web browser attempts to access a website protected by SSL/TLS, a connection is established; this process is known as the SSL/TLS “handshake”. By exchanging the secret keys needed to encrypt and decrypt the communication, this secured connection created by the SSL/TLS handshake enables the end-user client (such as a web browser) and a web server to authorize secure interactions with one another. The user is unaware of the immediate establishment of this SSL/TLS handshake. Learn more here.
