More than one-third of the Internet world is powered by WordPress. This means that one out of every four websites is using this great software. Can you imagine the scale of that? Do you realize how often you actually browse sites that are based on WordPress? It’s hard to imagine this engine’s scalability.
Now imagine yourself having an evil side. Everyone has one- just let it sink in. As your dark side takes over you and you are able to find a vulnerability in ANY of the WordPress sites. Imagine the possibilities! Now think what you could do if that vulnerability applies to 1.3 million of WordPress sites. Scary, isn’t it?
Ok, now forget about hacking into any of the websites. You are a good person. Come back to your good side, without unlearning what your dark side taught you. WordPress is a powerful tool and it is natural for it to be the center of big attacks. If you have a WordPress hosted website, then you are a target as well. And since it is your website, then the major responsibility of its security falls on your shoulders. After all, your website contains all your valuable input, content, videos, photos, and articles. You have material on your website from a time period you don’t remember, but it is of much importance to you. If you are serious about your website, then here are a few questions to ponder over:
How do you plan on safeguarding your data?
You believe your server is reliable – What if your server crashes tomorrow, will you be able to retrieve EVERYTHING off your website?
What if you lose all the work you have put into your WordPress website over the years, will you be devastated?
If you answered YES to the previous question and the ones preceding it, then you are in need of a backup solution for your website. It is important to know about backups but if you do not know about backups then rest assured, you have landed onto the right resource.
Why Is Backing Up WordPress Important?
Backing Up is important irrespective of your choice of WordPress or any other platform. It allows you to replug a working version of your website in case of a crash, an attack, any error during update, or for a human error as well.
Most of the time, you are not responsible for the errors that occur on your hosting server because, just like you are human and make mistakes, servers are also managed by humans as well. Some of these errors are severe and may end up compromising your whole website, therefore backing up is an important element for your website.
Backups help you to retrieve your complete websites, depending on how much you update and the frequency of your updates, without losing anything.
How to Backup WordPress?
There are two ways to back up your WordPress website: manually by yourself and automatically via plugins. Backing up your website manually requires some bit of technical knowledge, increasing the chances of errors if you are not well equipped. The other way is to use already available backup plugins.
Here, I have created a list of the best available plugins for backing up your WordPress website. Some are free, and some require you to pay an amount – but rest assured your investment is worth it.
Best WordPress Backup Plugins List
The single most reliable, simplistic and cost-effective backup plugin for WordPress on the market is BackupBuddy. I say “cost-effective” because it is not free but it is a premium tool which is worthy of its investment. It hosts a dedicated support team and a forum for troubleshooting any issue, if any, that arises.
Another major advantage of using BackupBuddy is its license based service. You get the license to use the plugin for the number of sites you mention in your plan. The license entitles you to support forums, regular updates, and more importantly, a 1GB of cloud storage for your backup.
If you are in search of a free backup plugin then BackWPup is the preferred choice. It allows you to backup and stores your complete backup on Dropbox, Rackspace Cloud, FTP, e-mail or on your personal computer. With an easy to use interface for backing up and restoring, it also offers automatic scheduling according to your website update frequency.
If you are willing to go the extra mile to safeguard your website, then VaultPress is for you. It offers you tools which help you to keep a whole snapshot of your website. All the features are provided in the premium quality, with easy to operate user interface.
VaultPress also comes with cloud storage, thus ensuring extra safety. As an added benefit, it also scans your code file for any malicious content.
Another reliable free backup resource for your website is PressBackup. It creates .zip files of each and every element of your website, which can be downloaded on your personal computer or stored on a server via FTP. It is simple to use and comes in a handy size as well.
Updraft is a highly popular free plugin which helps in creating a backup of WordPress site on Google Drive, Rackspace Cloud, Dropbox, and even via email. You can even perform quick restores, select specific files to backup and even download backup archives. If during a backup your upload fails, then the plugin is configured to reattempt the upload again. There’s a premium version as well, so you can switch to it for more features.
Duplicator is a backup solution that is not only limited to backup but can also copy your entire website. As you can imagine, this is a powerful backup solution, it may be one of the reasons why the plugin is installed on more than one million sites and has a rating of 4.9.
This plugin gives you the opportunity to migrate, copy, clone your site entirely from one location to another, which is a great solution if you are looking to rebuild your site that is no longer working.
You can use blogVault if you are looking for a free solution that offers automated WordPress update services. This is a solution that already has nearly 20,000+ installations and 4.3 rating as noted on WordPress.org.
This tool provides automated (which can be scheduled) backups to Dropbox if this is your storage solution. However, before running properly, blogVault needs some pre-setup, and even though the documentation claims the fact that the installation is simple, you will need to invest some of your time.
8. WordPress Backup & Clone Master
I would tend to think that protection is an endless race. Sometimes we get ahead, sometimes they are the hackers. The best protection against an attack will always be to have a good backup of a WordPress site, so even if one day a hacker finds the way to bother you, a referral of your files backed up and it’s done. It’s as simple as that. But you still have to have a good backup, and a tool to make your work easier.
You’ll understand, WordPress Backup & Clone Master fit into this straight line of the WordPress backup plugin.
Backup your site on demand or on schedule, the backup of your site will come in the form of a zipped file. You will have the choice between the full backup of your WordPress site or only the database, or the files present on your Web server.
To make the difference with other WordPress plugins, WordPress Backup will also allow you to make a clone copy, whether it’s on a new domain, or on a brand new installation.
9. Backup My WP to Dropbox
Saving your WordPress site is good, but having the files in a secure place is better. Backup My WP to Dropbox behaves like most other plugins by allowing you to make a backup of your WordPress site with a single-click or based on WP Cron for the latter to trigger automatically.
The big difference is that when the backup is finished, the zip file will be automatically sent to DropBox, and an email will be sent to inform you of the archive. Backup your WordPress site on Dropbox is the assurance of having WordPress backups always on hand.
10. Multi Plugin Installer
Let’s finish our selection of WordPress backup plugins with a slightly different plugin called as Multi Plugin Installer. Here, it is a matter of making you save working time, as well as all the configuration of your plugins. The purpose is to allow you to create a backup archive that you can reuse on another site to install multiple plugins with a single click.
