The Internet remains a scary place for site owners, especially those with WordPress powered websites. Since it powers roughly one in four of all the websites on the internet, it is a favorite target of cybercriminals.

The sad fact of the digital life is that no platform can be considered 100 percent secure and WordPress is no exception. We live in an age where a popular plugin can put 1.3 million WordPress website at risk.

So how can you have peace of mind in such hard times?

Well, you can install a security plugin, opt for a theme from a respected developer and apply all the security best practices on your site, and still, the threat might not go away completely. There is always a chance that disaster might strike anytime.

And it doesn’t have to be an external entity that can hit your website. There are times when the website developer makes a mistake and push a change/improvement that breaks the site. This is a pretty common scenario and when it happens you need a way to get things operational as soon as possible.

In both scenarios, the solution is simple: opt for a managed WordPress hosting and just install a WordPress backup plugin.

Why Back up WordPress Websites?

If your server crashes tomorrow, will you be able to recover EVERYTHING? What if you lose all the work you have put into your WordPress website over the years?

If you know the answers to these questions, you are in need of a backup solution for your website. But before going into the details of WordPress, it is important to know the importance of backups for WordPress websites.

Backing up website data is important irrespective of your choice of the WordPress version or the hosting solution. An active backup process on your website allows you to rebound from an attack or a crash without losing too much time.

Backups help you to recover websites without any hassle. However, this all depends upon your backup process and more importantly, the backup frequency. If the backup frequency is set up for a week, you would be able to recover the version saved seven days ago.  Thus, if your website sees frequent changes, you should consider setting a more realistic frequency to make sure you are able to recover a more recent version.

How to Back up WordPress Websites?

There are two ways to backup WordPress websites: manually (also known as on-demand) and automatically via backup plugins. Backing up your website manually requires technical knowledge, and the process has a higher chance of failure if you miss out on something. Thus the best way is to use WordPress backup plugins to simplify the process.

Here, I have created a list of the top WordPress backup and restore plugins for your website. Some are free, and some require you to pay– but rest assured your investment is worth it.

1. WordPress Backup & Security Plugin – BlogVault

WordPress Backup and Security Plugin BlogVault

You can use BlogVault if you are looking for a free solution that offers automated WordPress backup services. The plugin is already installed on nearly 20,000+ sites and has 4.3 ratings on the WordPress Plugin Repository.

This tool provides automated (which can be scheduled) backups to Dropbox if that is your storage solution. However BlogVault needs some pre-setup, and even though the documentation claims that the installation is simple, you will need to invest time in getting things right.

Features

  • Complete backup of your files and database
  • Real-time backups
  • Automation options
  • Ability to test backups before they are restored
  • 365-day rolling history of backup

  • No dashboard within your WordPress installation. You need to go to the BlogVault web app to get the details.
  • The web app can sometimes appear too complicated for the uninitiated.

2. VaultPress

VaultPress

If you are willing to go the extra mile in safeguarding your website, VaultPress is for you. With Industry-standard backup and restoration features, VaultPress integrates a lightweight yet powerful backup process within your website.

BackWPup WordPress Backup Plugin

If you are in search of a free WordPress backup plugin, choosing BackWPup is a great decision.  It allows you to back up your site and then store the backups on Dropbox, Rackspace Cloud, or on your personal computer. With an easy to use interface for backing up and restoring, it also offers automatic scheduling according to your website update frequency.

4. BackupBuddy

BackupBuddy is perhaps the single most reliable and cost-effective backup plugin for WordPress on the market today. I would add “cost-effective” to the list because it is not free. However, the premium tool is worth every cent. It has a dedicated support team and a forum for troubleshooting the issues.

Another major advantage of using BackupBuddy is its license based service. You get the license to use the plugin for the number of sites you mention in your plan. The license entitles you to support forums, regular updates, and more importantly, a 1 GB of cloud storage for your backup.

Features

  • Complete backup and restoration of your files and database
  • The ability to customize a backup schedule
  • Backup space available on iThemes servers
  • Saving the backups to BackupBuddy Stash, Amazon S3, Google Drive, Dropbox & other
  • Ability to take manual backups
  • Backup profiles with exclusion options
  • Integrated migration tool

Pros

  • A nice assistant to guide you when setting up your first backups
  • Email notifications of the status of your backups
  • The ability to limit the size of your archives if you need to preserve disk space
  • Integrated security analysis

Cons

  • No free plan or trial period
  • A bit more costly than the competition

5. BackUpWordPress

BackUpWordPress

BackUpWordPress is certainly a great WordPress backup plugin, but probably less functional than UpdraftPlus. It is almost as popular as the latter with more than 200,000 installations.

BackUpWordPress is perfect if you just want to schedule your backup and forget about it. Although its features are rather limited, it offers a host of easy-to-use features.

Features

  • Complete backup of your files and database
  • Works on shared hosting
  • Several backup schedules possible
  • Send backups by email
  • Customizable backup profile with exclusion options
  • Works on both Linux and Windows

Pros

  • Simple interface
  • Available in multiple languages

Cons

  • Absence of quality support
  • You must pay $99 for the developer pack so that you can store your backups on third-party storage services.

6. UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin

UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin

UpdraftPlus is a highly popular free plugin which helps in creating backups of the WordPress sites on Google Drive, Rackspace Cloud, Dropbox, and even via email. You can perform quick restores, select specific files to backup and download backup archives. If during a backup your upload fails, the plugin is configured to reattempt the upload. There’s a premium version that offers a whole host of improved features.

Features

  • Complete backup of your files and database
  • Automated and scheduled backups
  • Fast backup restoration
  • The ability to store backups on UpdraftPlus Vault, Amazon S3, Dropbox, Rackspace, Google Drive, Google Cloud Storage, DreamHost, DreamObjects, FTP, OpenStack, and your email account (you can even unlock additional services through the intermediary of paid add-ons)
  • Separate scheduled backups for web files and databases
  • Breakdown of large backups into multiple archives

Pros

  • Multiple languages supported
  • Simple interface
  • Advanced configuration options for experts

Cons

  • Minimum support

7. Duplicator – WordPress Migration Plugin

Duplicator WordPress Migration Plugin

Duplicator is a backup solution that is not only limited to backup but can also copy your entire website. As you can imagine, this is a powerful backup solution that is installed on more than one million sites and has a rating of 4.9 at the official WordPress Plugin Repository.

This plugin simplifies the process of migrating and/or cloning your sites entirely from one location to another, which is a great solution if you are looking to rebuild your site on another host.

8. WordPress Backup & Clone Master

WordPress Backup and Clone Master

I believe that WordPress website protection is an endless game. Sometimes you are ahead, sometimes it’s the hackers. The best protection against an attack will always be the capacity of a smooth backup process at your site. So when disaster strikes, all you have to do is restore the last available backup.

You can see how WordPress Backup & Clone Master fits right into this idea of website security.

With this plugin, you can back up the sites on-demand or on-schedule, with the backup available in a zip file. Additionally, you can either backup the entire website or just the selected files and database.

As an additional service, WordPress Backup & Clone Master allow you to make a clone of your website on a new domain, or at a new WordPress installation.

9. Backup My WP to Dropbox

Backup My WP to Dropbox

While almost everyone takes a backup of their WordPress website, few understand the implications of having a secure space for storing the backup files. Backup My WP to Dropbox behaves like most other plugins by allowing you to make a backup of your WordPress site in a single-click or through a WP cron job for an automatic scheduled backup.

The big difference is that when the backup is finished, the zip file will be automatically sent to the connected DropBox account, and you would be notified via email. Backup your WordPress site on Dropbox is the assurance of having WordPress backups always on hand.

10. Multi-Plugin Installer – Plugin Backup and Restore

Multi Plugin Installer Plugin Backup and Restore

Let’s finish this selection of WordPress backup plugins with a slightly different plugin – Multi Plugin Installer. This plugin saves a lot of your time you would otherwise spend in plugin backup. The purpose of this plugin is to create a backup archive that you can use on another site to install multiple plugins with a single click.

Once installed, the activation of all your plugins is done in a click. The backup and creation of the archive can include all the plugins or selected plugins

Recommendations and Considerations

It is hard to list all great WordPress backup plugins. New plugins continue to emerge every day and existing plugins improve the feature set to make sure they continue to provide excellent service to the users

Free Backup Plugin Recommendation

In my opinion, the plugin that provides the best mix of price and features is UpdraftPlus. This is a great plugin that offers a simple backup solution with several features targeted toward experienced users.

Premium Backup Plugin Recommendation

For those who swear by premium solutions, I would say VaultPress should be enough for all your needs. It’s hard to go wrong when you choose a product developed by the very team that developed the WordPress platform. The plans offer a nice balance of features so that you get the best bang for the buck.
