1. Akismet Anti-Spam
With 99.5% anti-spam accuracy, Akismet Anti-Spam is one of the most popular anti-spam plugins for WordPress websites. Such is its popularity that Automattic includes Akismet as the default anti-spam plugin in all of the versions.
Millions of WordPress website owners tend to rely on Akismet for its reliability and accuracy. One of its best advantages is that it robustly checks each and every comment posted on your website against its anti-spam database within no time.
If the comment is legitimate, you can always mark the comment as ‘not spam’. If the situation is another way round, Akismet automatically puts that particular comment into the Spam folder. It also displays the number of approved comments with the name of the commenter, thus making comment moderation really easy.
Usually, you need to have a registration key to install Akismet. Once installed, it works automatically and you don’t have to bother about anything else. Install Akismet and relax.
2. WP-SpamShield – WordPress Anti-Spam Plugin
Well, the WP-SpamShield Anti-Spam is a multi-purpose premium plugin that offers one-stop solutions for controlling comment spam for your WordPress websites. It also protects your website against the registration spam.
This anti-spam plugin works with a two-layered anti-spam mechanism that blocks all the automated and human-induced spam without ever breaching the code. It also protects your websites from unauthorized access and keeps a check on proxy powered spammers. It also protects your database against SQL injection thus making your website virtually impenetrable.
The best thing about this anti-spam plugin is that it works automatically at the backend. It also shields your website against trackback spam, automated spam, and contact form spam with effortless ease. And, you know what! This plugin is fully responsive and easily scalable, so your website will be live and healthy all the year-round.

4. Spam protection, AntiSpam, FireWall, Cleaner by CleanTalk
The beauty of Anti-Spam by CleanTalk is that it just works like Akismet. Unlike Akismet that requires you to pay a price and have an API registration key, Anti-Spam by CleanTalk is free to download and comes with a 30-day free trial period. Once, the trial period is over, you have to pay a nominal price of $8 to use this plugin. Not a bad bet! So, if you don’t want to use Akismet, you can use Anti-Spam by CleanTalk instead.
With this anti-spam plugin in place, you can block spam comments at your will. It also guards your WordPress website against subscription spam, registration spam, and other spam in various widget areas of your website.
5. Spam Master
Spam Master is an interesting plugin that helps protect your WordPress website against regular spam comments. It protects WordPress websites from thousands of spam emails, domains, IPs, and words by blocking user registrations or posting comments.
This plugin uses RBL technology (block lists in real time) and also comes with the Spam Learning feature. Thus, your WordPress website or blog will fight spam by providing a registration IP and emails for the analysis and inclusion of spam lists.
And, you know what! You don’t have to pay a single penny to have this plugin.
Anti-spam is another anti-spam plugin for WordPress that does not ask your commentators to complete a CAPTCHA. The plugin has no parameter zone, which is pretty unique for a plugin of this type.
Note that the plugin does not work with Jetpack Comments as these comments use an iframe. The pro version of Anti-spam is available for $25, it has a settings page with some additional features.
7. Cookies for Comments
Cookies for Comments can protect you from spam in another way. It adds a stylesheet or image to the source code of your WordPress website. It then drops a cookie when a browser loads that stylesheet or image. Thus, if the visitor leaves a comment, the cookie is checked.
However, if it is not found, then the comment is automatically classified as spam. This extension also calculates how long it took for a user to leave their comment. If the manipulation was too fast, it will be classified as spam too.
