An Insight on Amazon’s New SSE Server Side Encryption Platform

Amazon S3 SSE platform is designed to manage and store your confidential and sensitive data in the encrypted form using 256-bit advanced encryption or AES-256 standards.

The application was implemented with a view to support multi-factor data encryption, which otherwise created a hassle for users who had to undergo numerous procedures like selecting an algorithm, creating and securing the keys and lastly ensuring that encryption and decryption of the codes is done properly keeping all the factors involved in the process in mind.

Nevertheless, users can opt for AWS Management Console and Amazon S3 API platforms for operating Amazon S3 Server Side Encryption.

Old Methods of Encrypting a Computer File

Ancient method to secure data or any kind of secretive communication was simply done through Cryptography, a method that is carried out following certain protocols. Cryptography can be used as the other name for encryption also, which focused upon converting readable information or data into a junk of software codes or meaningless words that could only be dealt by parties authorized to encode or decode it.

Initially, most of the computer files were saved using symmetric key cryptography. Symmetric here means sharing same key for decrypting and encrypting a file. But, with latest technology instruments like Amazon S3 SSE securing data in an encrypted file format has become more versatile.

Lately, file encryption was done using cipher machines that were put in use at the onset of World Wars. The role of these machines was to decode confidential messages send in by army officials of different countries to communicate their strategies with the rivalries.

When a file to be encrypted is put in the HTTP header a key is generated that enables the data to store in an encrypted file format along with the master key. Because, securing keys is must for completing the file encryption process successfully, they are stored separately in distinct forms in the server.

How is New Amazon S3 SSE Different from Traditional Encryption Methods and Advantages Associated with Using it?

  • With ever so expanding Internet popularity and growing concept of online marketing, technological innovations also haven’t come to a standstill. Foremost advantage of using this application is that it offers safe and secure environment for the data to be stored in Amazon S3. Decryption happens automatically at the server side. This can be explained by stating an example. Suppose, you wish to download data of a particular type at the client’s end, the SSE application decrypts the downloaded data automatically. Moreover, the automatically decrypted data is again transformed into an encrypted format at the time it is uploading in Amazon S3.
  • The implemented application also reduces the task of handling and managing activities related to encryption, encryption of keys, and other associated tools on computer hard drives in CPUs. ATM cards and an organization running e-commerce are some of the examples that use encryption and decryption tools.
  • Additional advantage of using Amazon’s S3 SSE is that it captures your cloud in the bucket form. This means that the user is provided with the access protocol through which he will be able to read the entire content of the stored data. The application is a much better substitute for Google’s Application Engine that functions the other vice-a-verse manner.
  • Cloud computing service providers like Rackspace Cloud and GoGrid that compete with each other for providing maximum amount of hosting space to their clients have also shown their keen interest in using Amazon S3 SSE as their data storage platform.

Cons of File Encryption

Although, file encryption is beneficial for safeguarding organizational data, it can also be misused by some unauthorized parties for leaking confidential information in order to pose threat to the ruling governments of different countries in some or the other way. This is the only con that still needs to be tackled by the technocrats.
