A ‘coming soon’ page is a perfect statement of intent before your WordPress site goes live. It gives visitors key information about your site and lets them know when it will be live. Plus, you’ll be able to get a head-start on lead generation and Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
What’s more, it can be very easy to set up if you use the right tools. There are plenty of ways you can implement a coming soon page on your WordPress site. However, the simplest and most versatile method by far is using a plugin, such as WordPress Coming Soon Page & Maintenance Mode. In this article, we’ll talk about why you should consider creating a WordPress coming soon page for your new site. Then we’ll show you how to set one up. Let’s get started!
What a Coming Soon Page Is (And Why You Should Create One)
A coming soon page is a placeholder that appears on a site while it’s still being developed. It generally consists of a single page, which informs visitors that the site is not yet live. Of course, the functionality of a coming soon page differs depending on each site’s purpose and branding. For example, you could use one to display additional information about your site, provide relevant links, or even include an email signup form. There are plenty of benefits to using a coming soon landing page for your unreleased WordPress site. You can:
- Build anticipation for your site. A coming soon page enables you to present a great first impression, as opposed to a half-baked site under construction.
- Provide information to visitors. You can use the page to explain what your site is all about and when it’s expected to launch.
- Start collecting email addresses. If you add an email collection form to the page, you can start gathering leads and email addresses right away.
- Get a head-start on Search Engine Optimization (SEO). A coming soon page enables you to start building your site’s SEO rankings before it even goes live, and is strongly recommended by Google for all new sites.
It’s also worth noting that while a coming soon page functions as a placeholder that obscures your actual site, you can bypass it if you need to. For example, if you want clients or developers to view the actual site, you can give them bypass access.
How to Create a WordPress Coming Soon Page (In 3 Steps)
Now, we’re going to show you how can create a coming soon page for your site. We’ll be using the Cloudways Platform, which provides managed cloud hosting. If you haven’t yet, you’ll first want to sign up for an account. Then you can move on to the first step!
Step 1: Disable Varnish and Other Caching Solutions
Before you can create your WordPress coming soon page, you will need to ensure that your site’s Varnish and other caching is disabled. This will avoid issues that can occur if a coming soon page is cached. Fortunately, disabling Varnish in Cloudways is very easy. Log in to your Cloudways Dashboard and select your application. You can now click on Manage Services, where you will see Varnish at the very bottom:
Click Disable to turn off Varnish caching on your applications:
You can also turn off Varnish caching for individual applications from the Application Settings page:
When you’ve done that, you’re ready to start building your coming soon page.
Step 2: Choose and Install a Coming Soon Plugin
The first thing you’ll need is a plugin, such as Coming Soon Page & Maintenance Mode:
This plugin is simple to use and makes the process of creating a coming soon page intuitive. Some of its key features include:
- Responsive and compatible with all WordPress themes
- Easy to configure and customize
- Supports adding custom HTML and CSS
- Offers an extended Pro version, which adds even more features (such as email form integration, and the ability to enable certain users to bypass the coming soon page)
You’ll need to start by accessing your WordPress site’s admin dashboard and installing the plugin:
Once you have activated the plugin, you will be taken directly to its settings page. This is where you’ll create your coming soon page, which we’ll look at next step.
Step 3: Customize Your New Coming Soon Page
Now, you can start building your coming soon page. There are plenty of options available to you, which are split into several tabs. The most important sections are Content and Design. In the Content tab, you can choose what your page will contain:
You can upload an image, add a headline, and add content using a text editor that’s mostly identical to the standard WordPress editor. If you scroll down, you’ll see additional options for adding an SEO title and meta description, uploading a favicon, and adding your Google Analytics code:
Then you can switch over to the Design tab, where you can customize the coming soon page’s appearance:
Here you can select a background color or upload a background image. You can choose the style to use for your text and even add custom CSS:
Once you’ve added content and customized the design, you’re ready to activate your ‘coming soon’ page. You do this from the Content tab, by selecting Enable Coming Soon Mode:
This will enable the coming soon page. When anybody who isn’t logged in to your site tries to access it, they will see the page you just created:
You’ve now successfully created a coming soon page in Cloudways! Feel free to experiment with your content and design, to make it look even better and add extra functionality.
