WooCommerce Grouped Product works in much the same way as normal categories and tags you have when writing posts in WordPress. They can be created, edited, and selected at any time. This can be done when you first create a product or come back and edit it or the category/tag specifically.
Now that we have a simple product setup, let’s see what it’s like to work with a grouped product . A grouped product is a combination of one or more products that you can buy together as a single product. What we are going to do for our grouped product is create a book and ebook bundle. We add a long description, scroll down and select Grouped Product.
WooCommerce grouped product is created in much the same way as a simple product. The only difference is you select Grouped from the Product Type dropdown in the General product tab details.
You can also add a price and other product details, as needed. Now go to Linked Products to select the parent product from the Grouping drop down. There is nothing else we really need to do in this section, unless we want to blank upsell or cross-sell a product, for which we add attributes or any of the custom options.
Only leave the option to leave reviews separately for the individual parts of the bundle
We can scroll down and put a short description.
In add a new category, we will call it “books” and then add tag “Literature”. After that, we will set featured image.
And then we can scroll up and click publish. Now if we go to view this product, right now you would see that it only gives us information about the product and there are no options to buy it.
The reason for that is that now we have to go back and create a simple product for a book and an ebook and assign them to be part of this bundle. So, we will go in and create a new product called book.
However, under linked product we can now choose a grouping for this to go under the book and ebook bundle, so we will select that and fill in a price.
And then we can enter in our weight and dimensions. In this case kilograms, is probably not the best measurements for weights since a book like this would probably only weigh 1 kilogram. We will enter the dimensions somewhere around 20 centimeters by 13 by 4.
Now, the product is book and earlier we had set up a shipping class specifically for books. We could go ahead and check that as our shipping class and that would assign a different shipping amount than would be assigned to other products because we are bundling this with an ebook. Then, this shipping class would be the only class that applies to ping for the overall grouped item.
Under attributes, we can add some other things like author, ISPN etc. We are just going to copy/paste an example ISPN number we can look up online, and then maybe have something about the publisher or we will then put in a short product description .
By setting our category to books again, we could apply tags that we want. Maybe it’s a technology product and then featured image here, we have one that is same as the previous .
We will go ahead and publish this and then when we come to view the product. We could see that we have this book available, but we also have a related product automatically created that is the bundle of book and the ebook.
Now we don’t have the ebook added so we are only seeing one of these. But for this bundle, we could see how many books we wanted to select and then add them to cart.
The customer might intend to buy just the regular book. This is where we want the ebook bundle, but here we have just the book so we will see how that works and then we will pair it with bundle.
We will publish that and come back to view our product and we see that we have the ebook with nothing here for a picture and then Related Product. We have the bundle as well as book by itself.
Lets come into our shop which will show all of our products and we can see that we have this book and ebook. Click on it.
Now we have however many of book we want to add and however many of the ebook we want to add. So we would assume that somebody would want one of each.
They could set that up and then Add to Cart and then they will have both of those products in their cart, paired together.
This tutorial is helpful when you want to sell things together on your site that are listed independently, but can also be sold and packaged as one group through the use of categories. You can potentially hide some content and only show grouped products if that is your preference. However you are trying to sell your products or have people Add to Cart, you can achieve that.
