The web development industry has immense prospects for web agencies in Australia. Owing to the $1billion industry’s 3% forecasted annual growth and growing adoption of digital technologies, web agencies have a lot in store for themselves in terms of Australian ecommerce industry business opportunities.
Nevertheless, web agencies still face a string of challenges that include: meeting client expectations, client participation in the development process, and in addressing handover issues.
To discover the scope of these challenges, I decided to float a survey that aims to shed light on these points. I sent out the questionnaire to 21 web agency representatives across Australia.
All participants are prestigious web development agencies with the experience ranging from 2 to 8 years. Some have hands-on experience working with popular tools such as PHP, while whilst others concentrate on making websites using popular CMS platforms, such as WordPress and Drupal.
The participants were asked to respond to the following: most common challenges faced from clients, view on client’s involvement in the development phase, most common web agency challenges, and method used for addressing handover issues.
Before exploring the results, it is worth highlighting some key survey takeaways.

The most common challenge faced by web developers is lack of proper communication and clarity of requests and expectations from the clients. Other challenges such as client not knowing what they want and constant changing in project scope were also reported.
View On Client Participation In The Project Development Process
Most participants had a positive view about client participation, terming it as very important for helping clients and developers be on the same page. Others, however, called for a delicate balance, stressing that neither too much or too little involvement leads to a win-win situation.

Understanding clients’ changing needs and acquiring and retaining customers were the most common challenges faced by developers. Others include conforming to legal obligations and service agreements and recommending the right hosting solution to clients.
