The holidays are just round the corner. Everyone is busy planning their adventurous vacations, so are the tech-scious developers. After going through immersive hard work and relentless brainstorming sessions throughout the year, it’s time for them to relax a bit and take a little lay off. Getting a bit time away from the job is very important for developers. It lets them to refresh themselves with things they love to do.
In this article, we bring you an insight into what developers are upto during their holidays. We have gathered some interesting responses from developers. Read along to know what they have to share. so let’s roll the holidays like this:
Quentin loves to play video games and watching TV shows. Well, like most of us, he is also fond of spending free time playing lots of video games.
Same as the rest of my free time: I play video games and watch TV shows all day before complaining that I lack time to work on my side projects 😁
Ben loves to read books during his free time, but he might get disturbed a bit staying in between the family. He shared his thought as:
I’ll be spending my winter holidays around family and friends while mostly reading books so I don’t need to talk to them that much. 😄
Yaser had an interesting idea to share:
Seems like dev.to has many cousins who are born this way 😂😂
You know what I’m gonna open a topic about those stuff… let’s see the community’s holidays born projects 😆Kayla seems to be busy during the holidays, but has plans to read dev.to in the office.
I go to work to let the people with kids and close, big families spend time with them. Our only mandatory days off are Dec 25th and Jan 1st, so I don’t want to take all that PTO just to sit at home reading dev.to when there’s going to be no work so I’ll be reading dev.to in the office.
Which works until we have expectations to complete .4x the amount of work as normal when functionally there’s only 1 QA in the office and 2 devs WFH the whole sprint. And those devs aren’t the same the whole time, so it ends up being mostly people half finishing work then passing it on to someone else while I’m waiting for something to test.
Xander always seems to be busy in holidays. Besides enjoying hangouts with his friends, he occasionally spends time his girlfriend over a foreign trip. But on these vacations, he has something different to do. He will try out a new game engine and read a new Algorithm book which he has bought recently.
I’m 35 now, work as a lead software developer. I started doing computer stuff(image/video editting/FX, networking and front/backend/hardware programming) since I was 14. I spend most of my evenings and weekends writing or reading about code for as long as I can remember. As a kid I loved to play with crayons or set up armies of GI-joe figurines or read comics, visit the library. Cozy “me” time has always been very important. Now and then I go on holiday for a weekend to see friends abroad or rent a boat with friends to go out for a week of trailer trash booze pirating and sometimes I go with my girlfriend to see a foreign city. My girlfriend just had 2 weeks off chilling.
In a few days I start my 3-week holiday, and I’m planning to do what I have been doing whole my life: Feeding my urges to play, read and to create. I bought a book about Algorithms and one about Category theory, which I want to work through. There is also a game-engine which I want to try out.
So yeah.. that is how I just go through life and holidays 😀
I wish you all a creative and fulfilling holiday!
Florian like most of us, will be spending his Christmas holidays with his wife and close friends.
I used to play video games and when I’m bored of that, I wrote code for some side projects.
However now that I’ve got a wife and a toddler, I’ll celebrate Christmas and hang out with my in-laws like any other boring family does. 😁👍
Jacinto seems to be a journeyman. He mostly spends his holidays exploring foreign cities and adventurous locations. He’s got the same plans for coming holidays too:
The only thing that I do in vacations is travel. I travel multiple times at year. (I did it 5 or 6 times this year) I’m constantly looking for cheap tickets. I’ll spend Christmas and New Year in Chile and in May I want to go to Cuba, sadly the tickets are expensive :'(
Fris will be busy finishing his Netflix shows and sometime completing his new project.
I don’t take vacations, as I don’t need those. I’ve got plenty of work to do like finishing some cool new stuff for twist.moe, finish some animes and Netflix shows that I have started but couldn’t finish and yea that’s all I guess.
Pandita loves to be with family, spending some memorable time and sharing presents at the eve of Christmas. So he will be doing the same during holidays.
I always take vacations in Christmas so I always spend it with my family, eating, receiving and giving gifts and just having lots of fun with them. To me Christmas is the most important time of the year because I always have a lot of fun and I hope this year is the same!!
Anthony had his holiday plans chalked out in advance, and the last one is pretty hilarious:
Catch up on reading, build/paint/play Warhammer 40k, extra time with kiddos, smattering of video games, find a quiet room and think about nothing.
Well honestly, I couldn’t hold on to what he said.
This line “find a quiet room and think about nothing.” haha, How would you do that? :p
Anthony again replied in a pretty cool manner and seems he will be enjoying these holidays a lot:
It has always been a dream of mine to have a soundproof room in my house with only a really comfy recliner in it. As for thinking about nothing — my wife says it is a superpower of mine. Haha.
Casey seems to go with some interesting Youtube videos, the one she has also shared in her reply.
It’s the Nothing Box!
Meanwhile Matthew seems to be busy as ever. He has got only two days off. He is working on a PHP project and aims to complete that during the time:
I have today and Tuesday off work… and I’m working on my PHP search client library.
I found his PHP project quite interesting.
wow, where you will integrate that?
The concept is essentially for a consistent interface to numerous search services, similar to an ORM, by using swappable drivers. Currently working on the reference driver (Elasticsearch), but once that’s done I’ll start adding drivers for other search services, probably Algolia and Solr, and maybe TNTSearch too, as well as a null driver for testing. Also have in mind a couple of decorators for caching and logging. Whether it’ll ever see the light of day, or I’ll use it on a personal project, I don’t know, but I wanted to learn Elasticsearch anyway so it’s a good way to force myself to pick that up.
Lavinia is an avid Youtuber. She will spend her time on this popular video sharing channel.
Vacations? What’s that? 😆 Well when I have some available time I waste it watching YouTube videos of MUA or doramas
While some people like Andre don’t have any vacations left. Sadly, he looks a bit unplanned for the coming days:
Got married this year, took 3 weeks off for honeymoon. No vacation left 🙁
James will be spending a whole lot of time with his family, keeping himself far away from the internet.
I am going to be spending a whole bunch of time with my family, largely away from the internet.
It’s gonna be pretty good.
From The Reddit
I have got some interesting replies from the Reddit too, as there are a large number of active developers in the community there. I have listed some of the very interesting comments.
Seaphpdev looks busy as usual. He has some upgrading plans for his Ubuntu server. He’s got some really hefty work to finish on these holidays.
I’ll be upgrading our servers to Ubuntu 18.04 (PHP 7.2) from Ubuntu 16.04 PHP (7.0). Built out an image a couple weeks ago on AWS. We’ll be vetting the new image in our integration and staging environments this week. Then deploy new instances to replace what we have in prod. Working at a start-up as the only back-end engineer, I also wear the hat of DevOps but rarely have the time to prioritize such upgrades. The winter holiday is the perfect time to do that from the comfort of my home office with the added bonus of wearing sweatpants and slippers.
SMAtaurRahman also seems busy during the holidays, learning new technologies, including exploring PHP 7.3 to getting a sneak peek of new MariaDB 10.3, he has some tech-curios plans for the holidays:
I think I saw myself in your comment. Planning to move to KVM from OpenVZ, bumping PHP version to 7.3, Peek at MariaDB 10.3, Try out HTTP/2 on this vacation. I am also only backend Dev on a start-up, every 3 months I get to wear hat of devops too. :p
MrEcho seems to feel a bit uncomfortable about the holidays. That’s because developers like him don’t get enough time to enjoy holidays. Just like his name, his comment also echoes his sad thoughts.
What’s this thing you call a vacation?
Evilmaus seems to love sleeping. He has got sarcastically hefty plans of having a good sleep. Besides this, he will be spending time on Machine Learning (the next big thing) and has some plans to get a good learning hand on Python, Pandas etc:
Sleep. Lots of sleep. As much as the kids will permit me to get. So… maybe the kind of sleep that most other adults normally get. (So much sleep.). Smash Brothers is out and I’ll have it before the month is done, so some good times with Smash. Pathfinder: Kingmaker has also sucked me in. Beyond that, tinkering with code that I don’t normally get to in the day job. Been reading up on machine learning stuff for years now and have done a couple of personal libraries to put the theory into practice. I think this winter break is the time to finally get my hands dirty with Python, Pandas, SkiKit, etc.. Oh, did I mention sleep?
iFBGM seems to be working on some nice techy project.
Going to finish my side project where I utilize ATM networks (Cash machines) to serve Ads in stores / restaurants / airports. Already got some clients, just need to finish the code.
Shendryl has some exciting plans for the coming holidays including playing the ever-famous Dungeons and Dragons, Falcon BMC etc. Besides gaming, Shendryl has some cool plans of hoteling too on the eve of New Year:
Playing Dungeons and Dragons, Falcon BMS, Doom and The Division. Eating good food and drinking excellent wine. And at new years eve, lots of oliebollen!
ndboost has plans to enjoy Xmas with his family. He won’t be thinking of any work until 2nd day of New Year and plans to make full use of these days:
I’m off on vacation until the 2nd of the new year. RDR II & AB’s Eggnog is pretty much all that I will be doing until then. I think we have made promises to see my in-laws xmas day. If that is the case, go there grub down and get back home without ruffling too many feathers…
Zorndyuke loves outing in the holidays, so he has sought some sane plans for the holidays. He will be spending some good time in Amsterdam and will be enjoying Christmas there. Besides it, he might be working on some side projects as well.
Well, we’ll spend a week in Amsterdam. The city looks gorgeous with all the christmas decoration and the snow all around. If Queens is available in German we will look it there too and maybe one or more musicals (really want to see the blue man group).
If anyone has some tips for places to visit (even food related!) then go ahead! We also want to try out The Sea Palace Chinese restaurant. Then there was a famous breakfast store something like “Omlette” or so where they make you some omlettes that will mindfaq you (not talking about drugs :P).
I also have several side projects and I am not sure which one I want to continue.. one is an API Client + overall service for a browsergame (using their public API) and one is a “better” WordPress, now since WP5 is out and still not close to being “acceptable”. Just using WP too rarely to know each thing that I have to include and plan into the future..
Andreas looks forward to improve his coding and learn some API tests. Besides tech work, he too has some plans to give time to his loved ones.
I’ll improve code coverage and add some useful and missing unit, integration and API tests. 🙂
Moreover, spending some time with family as well of course!
These were some of the interesting replies I gathered from few developers on how they will be spending some good time on holidays.
How will you spend your holidays? Do share your plans and experiences with us.
Happy Holidays 🙂
