I am sure you must have come across this buzzing word ‘PWA’ (Progressive Web Apps) that has become the talk of the town among the tech-enthusiasts.
Some of the leading companies including Instagram, Twitter and Uber are taking advantage of PWA and experiencing tremendous outcomes in regards to revenue generation and user experience. For Alibaba, the PWA strategy has resulted in a 76% increase in total conversions (direct contact with a supplier) across browsers.
Earlier this year, Magento announced its own PWA studio to offer an amazing shopping experience for the online customers. Keeping in view the tremendous growth potential in PWAs, Cloudways organized an exclusive #CWChat Twitter session with Eric Erway Sr. Manager, Product Management at Magento, an Adobe Company to share his insights on the idea behind the development of Magento PWA Studio.
Eric has 20 years of experience under his belt. He has helped organizations with the design and development of world-class products and services. We are really thankful to Eric for being our guest on this live #CWChat session. If you had missed out on the live #CWChat session, here’s the recap for you.
Here’s the first question.
What’s PWA and how does it work?
Q1. Let’s start with a basic question. What is PWA, and how does it work? @ericerway #CWChat
— Cloudways (@Cloudways) December 5, 2019
Progressive web apps (PWA) was a term created at @Google in 2015 to define better web-based user experiences using capabilities in modern browsers. As a result, a new standard of fast, reliable and engaging web experiences was introduced. #CWChat #Magento
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
What’s the difference between Progressive Web Apps and native applications?
Q2. What’s the difference between #PWA and native applications? @ericerway #CWChat
— Cloudways (@Cloudways) December 5, 2019
PWA brings experiences (and performance) that were once reserved for native applications to the open web. Native is platform-dependent and requires an app store or marketplace which has limitations, although this is changing. #CWChat #Magento
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
Next, we asked Eric about how the Magento PWA studio came into being.
Q3. What is #Magento #PWA Studio? @ericerway #CWChat
— Cloudways (@Cloudways) December 5, 2019
PWA Studio enables merchants, partners, and developers to build, optimize and deploy Progressive Web Applications on Magento 2. There are four live stores using PWA Studio, more planned in the next few months and 100+ contributors from our @magento community. #CWChat #Magento
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
@raybogman What are your thoughts on #PWA Studio?
— Syed Muneeb Ul Hasan (@syed_muneebb) December 5, 2019
I really love, solid solution when building #magento2 #pwa #highperformance #frontends
— Ray Bogman (@raybogman) December 5, 2019
💯 agree. The feedback from developers using PWA Studio has been very positive. @JamesZetlen and team made this a focus from day one.
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
Hey @ericerway
Thanks for your precious time.I want to ask what components Magento offers to build effective PWA? And is there any extension available in the market that helps to build PWA easily?
— Ashmal ur Rehman (@AshmalurRehman) December 5, 2019
Thanks for your question! PWA Studio itself has a basic PWA storefront in Venia out of the box. Great for getting started. First customers have extended payments, shipping, ratings and other integrations themselves and @MagentoMP is a priority in 2020.
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
Our fourth question was about what advantages we can avail of having a Magento PWA store?
Q4. What are the key benefits of having a #Magento store with #PWA? @ericerway #CWChat
— Cloudways (@Cloudways) December 5, 2019
As a developer and partner, working with PWA Studio is 💯 easier to use and pushes the limit on shopping experiences. Merchants over time will have lower TCO, faster TTM, and improved business results based on early results we’ve seen. #CWChat #Magento
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
We also asked him about the online shopping experience: How PWA offers a better shopping experience for online customers?
Q5. How does #Magento #PWA help with shoppers/visitors? @ericerway #CWChat
— Cloudways (@Cloudways) December 5, 2019
Mobile-first commerce is here, accounting for 61% of online shopping during Black Friday 2019 according to @AnalyticsCloud. PWA addresses the 50% difference between mobile native and web conversion and our new Magento storefront is built around this standard. #CWChat #Magento
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
What kind of procedures and resources one should have at his disposal to build the Magento Progressive Web Applications.
Q6. How do you get started with building a #PWA using #Magento? @ericerway #CWChat
— Cloudways (@Cloudways) December 5, 2019
Documentation from @MagentoDevDocs at https://t.co/AoW5DsRBQe is a great resource. First-timers can get the Venia storefront up and running in a few minutes. We also have weekly calls and a Slack channel with 1500+ members through @magentoengcom. #CWChat #Magento
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
All of us love to have some Magento tips. Here comes the bonus question.
Q7. Bonus question! What is the future of mobile commerce and how it relates to #PWA? @ericerway #CWChat
— Cloudways (@Cloudways) December 5, 2019
In only 280 characters? PWA is just the beginning of how we can utilize today’s desktop/mobile capabilities to create superior shopping experiences. New capabilities are being introduced regularly. In the future, it’s just the web and mobile commerce done right. #CWChat #Magento
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
Last, but not the least, who would you like to see next on CWC Twitter Session? Please tag him/her.
Q8. Lastly, who would you like to see next on the #CWChat? @ericerway
— Cloudways (@Cloudways) December 5, 2019
I would love to see @nrkapoor on our team talk about everything happening behind the scenes with @GraphQL at @magento, which is fundamental for PWA and our headless commerce strategy. #CWChat #Magento
— Eric Erway (@ericerway) December 5, 2019
